Although the band has re-recorded the track many times, this original version with it’s use of 80’s keys and beat box somehow seems to capture the moment better. There is an interesting contrast between the cold synth sounds and the warm sound of the acoustic guitar and the harp.
On the lyrical side of things Frankie is caught down and out. Knowing everything is lost except his dying soul.
lyrics
Tonight its cold outside
I got an open window somewhere
Somewhere there’s a leak
But our veins are burning
From empty stores to lonely streets
They´re nothing but empty
Like that faded old memory
Of our long lost summer romance
- but we took that chance
You say there is nothing left
Don’t wanna see me again, all right
Baby I´ll plead no contest
Though I can’t tell just how you feel
That’s how I feel myself
You needed so much more
And I cant figure out
Why you`re sitting on my couch
Oh Lord, judge come anyone
Somebody tell it all
Baby testify tonight
Baby pray it’s all right
Of all the loves I’ve watched go bad
Nobody hurt just like this
Loneliness can be your worst companion
If anyone can tell the truth
Come tell it all I’m listening
But I cant do much more
Cause I am just a man
But I took that chance
On nights like this
I pray that I will never see you again
But then I see your face and take it all back
Your heart’s a stone I carved myself
I never needed no help
Never needed no one
Never needed a hand
But we took the chance
Oh Lord, judge come anyone
Somebody tell it all
Baby testify tonight
Baby pray it’s all right
